In 1997, Anne was divorced, working two jobs, raising her grandson and living in a tiny apartment. We asked her when she slept. She replied, “Weekends!” She needed some stability in her life.
Then she was approved for a Habitat house. Starting with the foundation, she (along with Habitat volunteers from Riverwood International) built her house. She says building with her own hands was overwhelming. It created a strong connection between her and her home.
Today, Anne made the last payment on her mortgage. She is looking forward to celebrating by visiting her son in Italy. When she returns, she plans to become more involved in charity work. She says, the best thing about her Habitat experience was the opportunity it created to give back to the community.
