Individual Volunteer Opportunities

There are many different ways to get involved with Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta!

Construction Crew

At a Habitat construction site, you will help build homes alongside staff members, future homeowners, and volunteers. Our construction crew is a group of committed volunteers who do prep work on our build sites and in our warehouse during the week and lead the groups of volunteers on weekend build days. Our construction crew takes on the role of a guide during the build days – often leading by being hands-off.

Tasks and responsibilities vary based on the construction schedule.

· Site preparations

· Framing and raising walls

· Siding installation

· Insulation installation and air-sealing

· Window and door installation

· Exterior or interior painting

· Landscaping

· Monthly Construction Meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.

· Ghosts do prep work on weekdays, about 16 hours per week

· Crew Leaders guide groups of volunteers on build days, about 8 hours per week

· Trainees spend 8 hours per week with a mentor and can become a Ghost, Crew Leader, or both after mentor approval

· Must be 18 years old

· Desire to provide service to the community and work with diverse populations

· A positive attitude and collaborative spirit

· Ability to follow safety guidelines and project directions

· Ability to be mindful of your environment and use sound judgment

· Ability to withstand the physical demands of standing in minimal shade, bending, lifting, and reaching

· Willingness to learn the construction manual and review it before each build day

Habitat Ambassador

Habitat Ambassador volunteers are an influential part of our organization, as they represent the affiliate and help continue our mission in affordable homeownership in the community. Ambassadors will assist our advocacy efforts by participating in social media campaigns and attending town hall meetings and local events.

· Developing community outreach projects

· Speaking and/or sending letters to local politicians and leaders

· Representing Habitat for Humanity in local events and festivals

· Participating in social media campaigns

· Attend all relevant training

· Attend 1-2 local events per month. (Event participation will be the primary mode of community engagement.)

· Monthly virtual check-ins to discuss project ideas and progress

· Must be 16 years old

· Strong interpersonal communication skills

· Strong leadership skills

· Ability to work in a team setting

· Following through with commitments and projects

· Eagerness towards helping and serving others

· Willingness to follow Habitat’s Ambassador Policies

· A positive and uplifting attitude

· Must be at least 16 years old

Homeowner Selection Committee

This committee is responsible for selecting partner families to purchase a home with Habitat, making fair, legal, and compassionate decisions which honor each family’s dreams, history, and reality. Committee members set the tone for our relationship with partner families and are ambassadors of Habitat, helping to educate our Board of Directors, other Habitat committees, and the public about the Fair Housing Act and other laws which govern our work.

· Complete training on Habitat’s homeowner selection policies, including the legal requirements set by the Fair Housing Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and other federal and local laws that govern home mortgages

· Assess need for housing, ability to pay, and willingness to partner by serving as an underwriter, home interviewer, or both

· Assist in providing educational opportunities to homeowner families

· Plan home dedication ceremonies for approved applicants

· Market Habitat’s housing solutions in partnership with local businesses, non-profit and government agencies, and faith communities to generate qualified applicants for traditional homeownership opportunities and other housing solutions

· Tues/Wednesday 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Sat/Sunday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

· Serve a one-year term

· Attend monthly meetings of the committee (evenings with a remote or on-site option)

· Attend one Applicant Orientation each year (evenings and weekends)

· Must be 18 years old

· Strong interpersonal communication skills

· Commitment to confidentiality

· Desire to provide service to the community

· Ability to work with diverse populations

· Willingness to espouse the mission and principles of Habitat for Humanity

· Undergo a criminal background check, ensuring that any disqualifiers in the Truth in Lending Act law are not present

Office Admin

The admin volunteer supports staff in the office by corresponding with program participants, volunteers, and the general public at the front desk and over the phone.

· Greet and direct guests

· Answer main phone line to provide information and take messages

· Receive mortgage payments and provide receipts

· Data entry

· Organize files and supplies

· Other administrative tasks as assigned

· 4-hour shifts

· Monday – Friday

· One day per week

· Must be 18 years old

· Strong communication skills

· Desire to provide service to the community and work with diverse populations

· Computer skills

· A positive attitude

ReStore Volunteer

The Habitat ReStore in Smyrna is a retail environment with constantly changing inventory and projects. These volunteers support the Habitat NWMA’s ReStore staff Tuesdays through Saturdays at the store by stocking, straightening the floor, organizing the donation collection area, and engaging with customers.

· Receiving donations

· Stocking store shelves

· Sorting materials (hardware, tile, tools, etc.)

· Merchandising (building and creating displays).

· Pricing inventory

· Basic maintenance (sweeping, cleaning, and organizing aisles)

· Greeting and customer service

· Loading and unloading trucks

· Assembling donated products

· 4-hour shifts, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

· Tuesday – Saturday

· Committing to a weekly or monthly schedule is preferred, based on availability

· Must be 18 years old

· Ability to lift/carry 30 – 40lbs

· Positive attitude

· Customer service skills

· Ability to be mindful of your environment and use sound judgment

· Ability to follow safety guidelines and project directions

· Organization skills

Safety/Site Coordinator

The safety coordinator works during volunteer build days to ensure that necessary supplies are available and that participants are following site safety protocols.

· Check-in volunteers, making sure that each person has the proper attire and has signed the volunteer waivers

· Make sure coolers have enough ice, bottled water, and sports drinks

· Helping everyone stay hydrated and encouraged throughout the day

· Set up lunch buffet for construction volunteers and crew

· Assist with clean up at the end of the build day

· Complete all required training courses

· One Saturday per month, from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.

· Must be 18 years old

· Hospitable

· Desire to provide service to the community and work with diverse populations

· Computer skills

· A positive attitude and collaborative spirit
