Become a Homeowner

People in your community and around the world partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners contribute by helping build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. With our support, Habitat homeowners gain the strength, stability, and independence needed to create a better life.

Qualifications

To apply for homeownership with Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta, you must meet the following criteria:

        • be a US citizen or permanent legal resident;
        • be a first-time home-buyer;
        • live or work in Cobb, Douglas or Paulding County (for at least one year);
        • live independently (for at least one year); and
        • total household income before taxes must fall within the following limits:

Selection Process

Homeowners are selected based on three key criteria:

1. Need for Housing.

        • You are unable to obtain a conventional mortgage.
        • Your rent is too high relative to your income.
        • Your current residence has maintenance issues that are not being addressed by the landlord.
        • Your current residence is too small for your family.

2. Willingness to Partner

        • You agree to complete 200 hours of sweat equity, which are earned by helping build your home alongside volunteers and through community service.
        • You agree to complete all required homeowner education.
        • You commit to fulfilling your partnership with Habitat after purchasing the home by:
              • Paying your mortgage on time.
              • Maintaining your home and lawn.
              • Observing all county and city ordinances and Habitat covenants.
              • Being a good neighbor.
              • Being a good representative of Habitat for Humanity.

3. Ability to Pay

        • Your income is sufficient to cover the monthly mortgage, including taxes and homeowner’s insurance, as well as other bills.
        • Your income and work history are stable and verifiable.
        • You demonstrate financial responsibility.
        • Your income falls within Habitat’s income guidelines.
