New Home Construction

New Home Construction Program

The Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta (Habitat NWMA) New Home Construction program is at the heart of Habitat’s mission to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing to families in need. Habitat NWMA works alongside local families to build homes that are not only affordable but also energy-efficient and sustainable. These homes are constructed with the help of volunteers, community partners, and donors who come together to make the dream of homeownership a reality for low-income families.

Habitat’s approach to home construction is unique in that future homeowners contribute “sweat equity” — hours of work on their own homes and the homes of others — before they become eligible to purchase a Habitat-house. This process helps families build a sense of community, pride, and ownership. After construction is completed, Habitat NWMA sells the home to the family at an affordable price, with a no-interest mortgage, making homeownership attainable for those who may otherwise be priced out of the market.

The Need for Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is one of the most pressing challenges facing communities today. In many areas, wages are not keeping pace with rising home prices, making it difficult for low- and moderate-income families to find housing they can afford. As a result, families often face overcrowded living conditions, homelessness, or the need to spend a disproportionate amount of their income on housing, leaving little room for other essential needs like healthcare, education, and transportation.

In Northwest Metro Atlanta, the need for affordable housing is especially acute. Median home prices have risen significantly in recent years, and many hardworking families — including teachers, firefighters, and healthcare workers — struggle to find affordable housing within the community where they work and live. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta plays a crucial role in addressing this gap by providing affordable homes that help families achieve stability and build a better future.

How to Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved with Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta’s New Home Construction program and help make a difference in the lives of families in need:

      1. Volunteer: Habitat NWMA is always looking for volunteers to help with home construction. Whether you have construction experience or are eager to learn, your time and skills are valuable. Volunteering on a Habitat build site is a hands-on way to contribute and see the direct impact of your work on a family’s life.

      2. Donate: Your financial contributions make it possible for Habitat NWMA to build homes for families in need. Whether you donate to support a specific build or contribute to the general fund/mission, your generosity ensures that Habitat NWMA can continue its work in the community.

      3. Become a Sponsor: Local businesses, foundations, and individuals can sponsor a home or a specific build project. Sponsors have the opportunity to be closely involved in the construction process and gain recognition for their support of affordable housing.

      4. Advocate: Help raise awareness about the need for affordable housing in your community. By advocating for policies that promote affordable housing development and fighting against legislation that makes it harder to build such homes, you can be a voice for change. Join Habitat NWMA’s advocacy efforts and help push for systemic change at the local, state, and national levels.

      5. Spread the Word: Share the mission and work of Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta with your friends, family, and coworkers. The more people who know about the need for affordable housing and Habitat NWMA’s efforts to provide it, the more support Habitat NWMA can gain to make a bigger impact.
