Assurant and Habitat Revive a Dream for Cobb County Veteran

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga., June 4, 2015 – A U.S. Navy veteran and her daughter welcomed the first guests to their new home Thursday — representatives of Assurant and Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta. It’s the 12th home sponsored by the company and built by volunteers from Assurant’s Atlanta offices.

Every Thursday for eight weeks, employees from Assurant – some 200 in all -– built a new home in suburban Powder Springs for Teresa Stafford and her daughter. Ms. Stafford was temporarily homeless and jobless, but now has a new career with the U.S. Postal Service, and a new Habitat home.

“It has been a struggle,” she said. “But thank you Assurant, and Habitat, for giving me back the dream that I had lost.”

Ms. Stafford joined Habitat officials and volunteers from Assurant to celebrate the dedication of her home, which she is purchasing through Habitat’s affordable home-ownership program. Along with Assurant’s volunteers, who worked under the guidance of Habitat house and crew leaders, a donation from the Assurant Foundation funded the construction materials.

Assurant has more than 2,000 employees in the metro Atlanta area. In addition to the 12 houses sponsored in full, Assurant’s Atlanta offices also have partnered on two co-sponsorships. Northwest Metro Atlanta Habitat is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the worldwide housing organization.
